VICE PRESIDENTS
Vice Presidents Day 3rd March 2007
Without doubt the highlight of the 2007 Vice President’s day was the outstanding performance of the home side in defeating a strong Gwernhyfed RFC by twenty three points to ten.
In achieving this win, the home side benefited greatly from the all weather playing surface recently installed at the Skew Fields. Indeed it was rumoured that representatives from the Welsh Rugby Union were present at the game, considering whether to install a similar playing surface at the Millennium Stadium.
Prior to the match, the Vice Presidents were entertained at one of the club’s corporate hospitality boxes. As a result, several VP’s found it difficult to make the short walk to pitch side and this was not helped by the excellent lunch that was served, the copius amounts of flowing red wine, Ray Rappel’s insatiable appetite …….and a rather attractive waitress.
Those that did make the game were treated to some fine open rugby by the home side who did well to overturn a half time deficit of ten points to three, with three unanswered tries from veterans Steve Roynon, Matthew Touhig and veteran outside half Chris Shott. Two penalty goals and a conversion from Shane Guest completed the scoring for West Mon.
Post match festivities did not on this occasion include the traditional auction and this saved most attendees a small fortune. It also focused attention on conversation, with several VP’s taking the opportunity to give younger members of the team the benefit of their “vast” playing experience. Coaches’ Tony Watkins and Mark Jones were relieved that none of the players appeared to take any notice of this advice, preferring in true “Old Boys” tradition, to concentrate on the liquid refreshments.
This also helped the volume of the singing although it did nothing for the quality of song with the X factor being given a whole new meaning, particularly following the rendition of “singing in the rain.”
The Vice Presidents Day has been taking place for over ten years and each one seems to get better. Thanks for the following that attended and helped to make such an enjoyable day.
