Glyn Harrison

All

Many of you will be sad to hear the news that "Big" Glyn Harrison has died from a sudden heart attack.  I believe that he was working on his allotment at the time.

Glyn played for the Old Boys (and then Panteg RFC) in the early 70s and was part of the biggest front row that the club has ever assembled, especially on the tours to Jersey.

He also had the loudest voice on the "bank" at the Pooler home games as all who were stood in ear shot would testify.

West Mon Xmas Golf Day 2009

A great golf day was held on Friday 27th Nov at Alice Springs. Were we lucky with the weather or what. Unbroken sunshine from start to finish. Ok a little soggy under foot but so what. Nineteen participants resulted in former goal kicking prop Bobby Lewis winning the coverted trophy. I am sure Mrs Lewis will be delighted. Longest drive went to Gareth Corfield whilst nearest the pin prizes went to Chris Shott and Alec Kestel.

Look out for details of an early summer golf tournament.

60th Anniversary Dinner

West Mon RFC held a very successful dinner dance to celebrate its 60th anniversary on Saturday 24th October 09 at Pontypool Golf Club.

Following a four course meal, the ninety six guests in attendance were welcomed by Gary Crewe who gave a brief talk on some of the highlights that the club had enjoyed during its six decades of existence, which included details of the first game played by the club on 23rd September 1949 against Newport HSOBs .

This was followed by an extremely amusing and informative speech by guest of honour John Perkins about his playing time with both Pontypool and Wales, delivered in his own inimitable way.  John proved to be a very popular guest whose  credibility within the West Mon club was further enhanced when it came to light that he had played for the “Old Boys” in a sevens tournament in Blaenafon, although he couldn’t actually recall the occasion himself.

The final speech of the evening was delivered by club President John Price who related several anecdotes from his long association with the club which had started in 1955.   The opportunity was also taken to reward several players for the previous season’s efforts.

The evening concluded with dancing until midnight whilst the ladies were also entertained by the club captain who demonstrated why he had recently failed an audition for the Chippendale group of male strippers.

West Mon RFC Dinner Dance

Many thanks to all that attended the dinner dance to celebrate the club's 60th anniversary.  Your support was very much appreciated.  Ninety six guests were in attendance which was a fantastic turnout.

The guest speaker, John Perkins had a great time and is looking forward to the next celebratory dinner, which I guess will be for the 65th anniversary.

Interestingly, it came to light that John has actually played for the Old Boys in a seven a side tournament many years ago, (thanks to Ray Rappel for recalling that moment)

A summary of the  evening will appear shortly on the club's website, and possible in the Free Press and Argus.

Many thanks again

Regards
Gary

West Mon Captain for Season 2009-10

After years of service playing for the club the new players choice of captain for this season is none other than DJ (David Winter).

As you can see from the picture DJ has taken the role very seriously and the club is in no doubt that his tactical awareness and "forward thinking" will bring out a new side to their game.

Good luck for the season.
